Engine Brake In Procedure

For brand new top-end (i.e. new pistons and/or rings and cylinder bored and/or honed)

break in oil:

20W50

valve lash clearances:

intake: 0.006" (0.10 mm)

exhaust: 0.010" (0.20 mm)

head torque:

26 - 29 ft lb / 35-39NM

maximum RPM:

4000 to 600mi / 1000KM

5000 to 1200mi / 2000KM

1 Crank starter with no fuel supply to prime oil until the oil light goes out

2 turn fuel on

3 start engine w/ minimal choke

4 immediately push RPM to 3000 for 15 seconds

5 push RPM to 3500 - 4000 RPM for 30 seconds

6 shut down

7 check for leaks

8 ride at 3500 - 4500 RPM for 20mi/30KM alternating between full throttle open and full throttle closed. The objective is to create as much compression as possible.

9 @20mi/30KM change oil

10 retorque heads using head torque procedure after letting sit overnight

11 follow normal break in procedure for 600mi/1000KM

BMW break-in procedure from R90/6 owner's manual:

Vary engine speeds and loads in various gears without exceeding maximum specified speeds. Winding roads in hilly country are particularly suitable for braking-in the machine. On straight, flat foods, it is best to run the machine almost up to maximum permitted break-in speed, then allow the machine to cover the next section of road with the engine off load.

12 @100KM change oil, adjust valve lash

13 @300KM change oil and filter

14 @500KM adjust valve lash

15 @1000KM adjust valve lash, retorque heads, change oil using break in oil

16 @2500KM change oil to synthetic 20W50 and filter

17 @3500KM adjust valve lash

18 @7500KM standard tuneup procedure

Follow normal maintenance schedule after 7500KM
